The Hassan Bek Mosque, located in the Jaffa along the Mediterranean coast of Palestine, is a historic Ottoman-era mosque built in 1916 by Jaffa’s Ottoman governor Hassan Bey al-Joukh (also spelled Hassan Bek). Constructed on a hilltop to serve the local Arab population and assert Muslim presence amid growing Jewish settlement, it features distinctive white stone walls, a tall minaret, and a prominent dome. Named after its founder, the mosque was strategically positioned to overlook the developing Jewish neighborhoods, symbolizing territorial and cultural demarcation. It survived the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, though the surrounding Manshiyya neighborhood was largely depopulated and later redeveloped. Restored in the 1980s and again in recent decades, it remains an active place of worship, administered by the Islamic Waqf, and stands as a symbol of Jaffa’s Arab heritage.
