The great mosque (Tiberias)
The Great Mosque of Tiberias (Al-Jami’ al-Kabir), also known as the Jami’ al-Bahr or Sea Mosque, is the largest and oldest surviving mosque in Tiberias, Palestine, originally built in 1743 by Ottoman governor Zahir al-Umar on the site of a Crusader-era church and earlier Byzantine structures near the Sea of Galilee. Constructed from black basalt and white limestone, it features a prominent dome, a slender minaret, and a spacious courtyard with an ancient sabil (drinking fountain), reflecting classic Ottoman provincial architecture. Located in the historic city center amid Tiberias’ old market and hot springs, it served as the primary place of worship for the Arab Muslim population until 1948, when the city was depopulated during the Arab-Israeli War. This historical monument stands as a symbol of Tiberias’ multicultural past.
