AL-BAHR MOSQUE / THE SEA MOSQUE (JAFFA)

The Al-Bahr Mosque, also known as the Sea Mosque, is the oldest surviving mosque in Jaffa's historic port, and was built in 1675 during Ottoman rule. Perched on the harbor overlooking the Mediterranean, it was constructed from limestone to serve fishermen, sailors, and local residents, with legends noting that sailors' wives prayed there for safe voyages. Featuring Ottoman-style architecture, including a minaret partially reconstructed over time and columns repurposed from ancient sites like Caesarea and Ashkelon, the modest structure offers panoramic sea views and symbolizes Jaffa's multicultural heritage amid its ancient alleyways and bustling markets. Restored in 1995 by the Al-Aqsa Foundation and again in 2012 with Turkish support, it remains an active place of worship, though access for non-Muslims is limited.
