Dome of Rock (Al Aqsa)

The Dome of the Rock (Qubbat al-Sakhra), located within the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound (Haram al-Sharif), is one of Islam’s earliest and most iconic architectural monuments, completed in 691–692 CE under Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Malik. Built over the Foundation Stone - sacred in Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions as the site of Prophet Muhammad’s Night Journey (Isra and Mi’raj) - it features a stunning golden dome (originally lead, gilded in 1959-1962 and 1993), intricate Quranic inscriptions, and vibrant Byzantine-influenced mosaics on an octagonal base. Though not a mosque itself, it serves as a shrine and symbol of Islamic sovereignty in Jerusalem, distinct from the congregational Al-Qibli Mosque to its south. Administered by the Jordanian-led Islamic Waqf, it remains a global emblem of faith, art, and contested sacred space.
